My Top Ten Favorite Science Fiction Movie Villainesses

Science Fiction is one of my favorite film genres. There aren’t many memorable villain roles played by women. Here are my top ten.

1. The Borg Queen from Star Trek: First Contact (1996) – Played by actress Alice Krige, the Queen is creepy and scary. Excellent makeup and costume design.

2. Evil Maria from Metropolis (1927) – Actress Brigette Helm plays the good Maria who gives hope to downtrodden workers of the future. Evil Maria is a robot made to look like Maria.

3. Mystique from X-Men (2000) – Mystique is a bad mutant shapeshifter played by Rebecca Romijn-Stamos in the first movie of the series. She’s scary.

4. Pris from Blade Runner (1982) – Pris is a replicant (android) with super human strength played by actress Daryl Hannah. She nearly kills Deckard (Harrison Ford) when she disguises herself as a mannequin.

5. Ursa from Superman (1978) – Ursa, played by Sarah Douglas, is one of the three evil Kryptonians who escape from the Phantom Zone prison and cause trouble for Superman.

6. Tara from The Manster (1959) – Tara is the femme fatale assistant to the mad scientist who injects a reporter with some drug that eventually gives him a second head. Yes. Tara is played by someone named Terri Zimmern who is one of the most enigmatic actresses in all of science fiction film – literally nothing is known about her.

7. Lori Quaid from Total Recall (1990) – Lori, played by Sharon Stone, is the wife of Doug Quaid (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) — or is she? Lori turns out to be a vicious killer.

8. Sil from Species (1995) – Sil, played by model turned actress Natasha Henstridge in her first role, is a hybrid human and alien. She wants to breed. You do not want to be her breeding partner. Well, it might be worth it.

9. Valaria from Robot Holocaust (1986) – Valaria, played by Angelika Jager, is the human henchwoman and follower of the Dark One in a post-apocalyptic world. This movie is a cult favorite because it’s bad almost beyond description.

10. Space Girl from Lifeforce (1985) – The space girl (no name), played by actress Mathilda May, is an alien space vampire who seduces men. And kills them. It would definitely be worth it.

Honorable Mention – Lucy, played by Scarlett Johansson in Lucy (2014) isn’t really evil. Same thing for the female robot Ava (Alicia Vikander) in Ex Machina (2015). Lady Deathstrike, played by Kelly Hu (I actually had her in one class when I was a professor in Hawaii!) in X2 (2003) almost made my list.
