Scala is a programming language that’s closely related to Java. I took a pretty close look at Scala recently. My initial impression is, “OK, just another language.”
From what I can see, Scala is mostly Java with tweaks, in particular the addition of functional programming paradigm features like var and val objects, and closures. I’m no fan of functional programming — in my opinion functional programming moves a language too far away (in terms of levels of abstraction) from the underlying assembly language / machine language on the target machine. So, Scala doesn’t do a whole lot for me.
That said, for programmers who do like and use functional programming techniques, Scala is definitely worth a look.
